Reflection : Introductory
Below is the first part of a excellent and thought provoking article which was writen by Guru Penglima Derek Owings of Pukulan Cimande Kombinasi and top student of Guru Besar Jerry Jacobs. The concluding part can be found at http://www.studiorajanaga.blogspot.com/ I would highly recommended reading the full article
An in depth look at my favorite quote:"You are what your deep driving desire is. As your desire is so is your will. As your will is so is your deed. As your deed is so is your destiny" This is a quote from the ancient Hindu text the Upanishads.
It very simply states how we create our own suffering and happiness. If your deepest driving desire is negative, and by this I mean that the thing that you want most out of life, to be gained, will harm others or yourself in the process, then what good is the desired result. If it is your desire to gain material things then what happiness will you have if to get there you have to put down others or do things to compromise your character, harming yourself and those you love in the process. Then in the end when it is too late you realize that everything of material value does not go with you when you die and you have neglected what is of real value in life.Your will is your intent. If your intentions are wrong even the most honorable of acts is still negative. People who give to charity only to be seen by others as generous is an example. Your intention is the key. What is the intention behind what you do, what you say, or even think. This path of self inquiry can lead to some disturbing self realizations. Do you during a conversation always try to dominate or seem like you are right. Do you feel the need to vent all of your problems after you have lent a shoulder to cry on as if to say " well my life or situation is worse than that". Think about why you say and do what you do. Do you even have control over your actions?....................

Festive Season
As we approach the end of the year, its usually a time for reflection over the year and a chance to meet family and friends, to have fun in a time of good will, to get refresh and look forward to a New Year, with new habits and goals.
When we look back over 2009 we see it was a year where we gain more independence as a Association. New Branches were open in Palmerstown, Balgaddy, Lucan and Athlone, new children classes were set up. New students and groups join our Long Distance Programe from not only Europe, but from America, Africa and Asia making Combat Silat International and Pukulan Cimande Combat a Global Association. 2009 was the year when we hosted one of the greats in Martial Arts Guru Cass Magda, we had a excellent Spring Camp, and asked to perform Silat by the Indonesian Community, to name a few of the highlights.
2010 will be the year we strengthen our bonds with our fellow Cimande brothers and sisters around the world and help our beautiful art spread. Many great projects that we have been working on so hard behind the scenes will finally come to bear. In January the CSI Logo Patch, Membership Book will be available. Our improve Long Distance Training programe will be officially open and will be making training in Pukulan Cimande Combat a exciting experience. In Feb our new Training Dvd's will be coming on line, and this will mean students will be able to follow directly from the Dvd the syllabus. Also in Feb we will have computerise our entire Administration, which will keep a up to date record of students training and achievements. 2009 will also be the year of my 25th Anniversary of teaching Silat so we will have lots of exciting events throughout the year.
I like to thank all my students and give my heart felt best wishes for support you have all given me this past 12 months, which in times of great adversity has given me the strength to carry on.
I like to wish you all a great Festive Season and a wonderful 2010 and look forward to seeing you all again, and spending time with you training in Cimande.
Best wishes to all Silat Players and their families everywhere.

Dec Workshop
The end of year workshop was held recently on Sunday 13th Dec in Dublin, which despite a week to Festive Season a large group of students turn up. It was a great mixed of different levels and it was great to see new faces in the art, and seeing the art continue to grow.
The workshop started with the Ular Sendok (Cobra) style and students were introduced to the Figure 8 Half Fist forward shielding which is used to intercept an Attacker strikes, along with this Black Cobra and its defensive patterns which include the Triangle, Circle, Square and Vertical 8. Students then began to explore the use of Waterfall Block along with low line Foot Trapping. As the students became more confident, they began to experience the concept of using Lanka Sarang (Spider Web) foot pattern which help the student to understand body levage and body mechanics allowing the students to deliver powerful strikes on the angles of attack while still controlling their attacker.
Students then began to move onto Kanching Stick. This stick is sometimes known as Pocket Stick, or Lighting Bolt Stick as it movements can Zig Zag and deliver explosive painful strikes. Students began to understand the 3 ranges the Kanching can work in and their corresponding holds / grips. The Kanching blends very well into the Snake Mannerisms so students were able to blend these two concepts together, which were brought to great use when Locks, and Sweeps were added to the mixed. Finally on the Kanching student learnt how to use their body to develop added power through reinforcing blocks and Strikes by generating power through their body by using all the tendons and muscles in whipping motions.
The final section of the seminar was given to the Ular Sawa (Python) this style of Silat is geared towards grappling more, since the Python uses it body to wrap and trap. Students were shown how to after blocking how to wrap up the attacker limbs and use hit trapping, a Joint breaking exercise. On of the great advantages off learning Ular Sawa is once mastered, is it counter lock concept which enables students to escape and reapplied any lock put on them. Its is a very unique concept that Silat has. The workshop finish on combining high line and low line Combat striking, which teaches students to attack all areas of the attacker at once, using off timing. The low line kicking evolves Toe Point Kicks along with Lead Leg Joint Kicks and Cross Kicks with Knees and Elbows thrown in with good measure. Finally students were taught how to use the Ular systems for Knife Defence, by destroying the attacker ability to hold the blade.
I like to thank personnally all the students who came along and supported the workshop and I hope you really enjoyed the experience. I really appreciated your interest and excitement in Silat.
