Guru Cass Seminar Oct 2009

What a great weekend was had by all, at Guru Cass Magda Seminar. Students from Dublin, Wexford, Athlone, Ballymena, Kilrea, Letterkenny along with students from UK and Germany, travel to experience one of the World's top Instructors on Silat. Guru Cass has been travelling around the World the past 20 Years promoting the culture and combat aspects of the Fighting Arts of South East Asia.
The style of Silat Guru Cass teaches is Buka Jalan, (Buka means to open and Jalan means the way / path, so together it means the "open way" or "open path". Training in this system like most complete styles of silat covers 1) Jurus 2)Langkahs (Footwork Strategies) 3) Sambut (Combat Techniques) 4)Sambutan (Counter Combat Techniques) 5 ) Ritasia 6)Weapons (staff, knife, stick, flexible weapons, Golok, Cabang etc..) 7)Specialize Exercises.
On the Saturday students work on aspects of Serak Silat covering three Langkahs, 1) Tiga 2)Amput 3) Lima. From each of these 3 Langkah students were taught how to use the Langkah to better develop combat techniques such as a) Sapu b) Kensit siko c) Angkat Kaki d)Biset / Besot e) Puter Kepald f) Kensit Kaki g) Tarik Kepala. Guru Cas finished off Saturday with a great display of Sarong technique.
On Sunday Guru Cass taught aspect from Mande Muda (the Suwanda family style) This system is made up of 22 Silat Styles. There was only time for Guru Cass to show some aspects of the following styles Kari, Maddi, Cimande, Tjipetjut, Harimau and Sybandar. Later on the Sunday students were taught some of the main philosophy of Silat Combat Tactics, such as "Pukulan" which is a Striking concept to tenderise an opponent, by delivering a series of strikes or "Pleekit", which teaches students to stick to their opponent (Principle of Adhesion, so Attacker can't get space to move or to be able to counter attack.
I along with all the members of Combat Silat International and Pukulan Cimande Combat would like to thank Guru Cass for coming to Ireland and to take the time out to teach us. It was one of the best seminars I ever attended and has left me feeling enriched by the wealth of knowledge and openness shared by Guru Cass and his Assistant Tom Woods. Best Wishes to you both.

25th Silat Anniversary

To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Silat becoming Established in Ireland we will be holding a week long festival starting Monday 17th May 2010 -23rd May 2010. One of the main highlights of this event will be, inviting different students, who have reach Instructor level over the 25 Years, to teach for couple of hours each, during the week or at the weekend. Each of these Instructors will be able to show their skill and passion, and what they learn personally from the Art, how it influence them and where it has led them today. They will talk about how they got involved in and maybe tell some funny stories of things that happen. We are going to to film this and present it as a living history of how our Association came into being, the ups and downs, and the dedication shown by a number of people to keep the Art alive. This way at the 50th Anniversary in 2035 people can look back and have accurate recording of the early years.

Also during the week Guru Liam will be teaching a class in exactly what he was teaching at different intervals. Monday 1985 , Tuesday 1990, Wednesday 1995, Thursday 2000, Friday 2005.

Other major events are also planned for the week long festival and over the next few months these details will be announced. We want to make this event a celebration of the fellowship of Silat.

Combat Silat International : School Philosophy

School Philosophy - A short overview by Guru Jonathan O'Neill

Most Pencak Silat schools are traditional in the spirit of their teaching, . This Silat student pursue their particular art as a lifelong ambition that fosters good health, discipline, humility, a strong spirit, courage, a natural morality, wisdom and inner peace and equally important the capacity for self defense. Students can benefit from martial arts, from the basic breathing techniques and Jurus etc etc... Our system has something for everyone.

You are expected to pay 100% attention at all times. Even though good friends are made here, we do not come to socialize. It's more the brotherhood of the Martial Artist, the underlying spirit that binds us in a common pursuit.Students in this system require three characteristics:

Desire. The student must want not only to achieve the physical rewards of martial training, but to accept the responsibilities that accompany the knowledge. A student's desire must be supported by patience,

Dedication. Success in martial arts training relies more on the regularity of practice and the passage of time, than any other factor. The student must be dedicated to attending classes, as well as maintaining a personal practice schedule, time permitting. Outside practice is necessary to achieve true progress. A Juru/technique learned, a Grading passed is a beginning, not an end, and should be thought of as a license to practice. It is said that a Juru/technique is not "yours" until you have practiced it one thousand times.

Discipline. A Silat student should be in control of setting goals and carrying them out, pushing their body's limits and developing new abilities are part of a martial artists plan for success. Discipline yourself to maintain your training schedule, whatever it may be, even if you are tired, because training is cumulative. In the real world, neither your opponents, nor any other form of stress will relent simply because you are tired. Only half of what martial artists achieve is physical, the other half is, of course, mental. Discipline fosters both physical and mental endurance ... crucial qualities for the martial artist.
